The short answer
- The jobs that lose money are usually the ones you had a feeling about at the quote.
- Pricing high to be turned down is a trap, sometimes they say yes.
- Decline early, briefly and without criticism. You do not owe a full explanation.
- Warning signs: haggling before the price, heavy criticism of the last trade, unclear decision-makers.
- A trade with a reputation for turning work down is a trade people believe.

The jobs to avoid
The customer who negotiates before you have quoted. Someone opening with what they will not pay is telling you how the whole job will go.
Heavy criticism of the previous trade. Sometimes justified. Often you are the next one on the list.
Unclear decision-making. Two people wanting different things and neither deciding means every choice gets revisited and every revision is unpaid.
Scope that keeps growing during the visit. Before you have priced anything, it has changed three times.
Work you have not done before, on a job with no margin for learning.
Anyone pushing hard on timescale without flexibility on anything else.
Do not price it high to get out
Common and dangerous. You quote a deliberately inflated figure expecting rejection, and occasionally they accept.
Now you have the difficult job at a price that made it look worthwhile, and the price is not what made it difficult. You still lose, and now you have committed.
If you do not want the job, say so.
How to decline
Early, briefly, and without criticism.
"Thanks for asking me to look, I don't think I'm the right fit for this one. I hope it goes well."
That is enough. You do not owe an explanation, and offering one usually invites negotiation about the thing you named.
If you can, refer someone. It costs nothing, it keeps the relationship warm, and it means the recommendation may come back.
Why it helps your reputation
Trades who take everything are trades with a full diary and unhappy customers.
Being visibly willing to say "that's not my strength, you want a specialist" is one of the fastest ways to be believed on everything else you claim. Customers remember the trade who turned work down honestly.
