The subfloor decides the outcome. Ask what preparation is included.
Moisture in concrete and screed causes failures. Ask whether it is being tested.
Wood and laminate need acclimatisation before fitting. Rushing it causes movement later.
Expansion gaps are not optional. Floors without them buckle.

What makes hiring a flooring fitter different

Almost every flooring failure is a subfloor failure. An uneven subfloor telegraphs through vinyl and causes hollow spots under boards. A damp screed destroys wood flooring from beneath. A floor fitted without expansion gaps lifts at the edges when it grows.

None of this is visible after installation, and all of it shows up months later.

Preparation, moisture and acclimatisation

Levelling. Ask whether latex or self-levelling compound is included, and whether the price assumes the floor is already flat. It rarely is.

Moisture. New concrete and screed hold moisture for a long time. Ask whether it is being tested and what the reading needs to be. Fitting wood over a damp slab without a barrier is a guaranteed failure.

Acclimatisation. Wood and laminate should sit in the room, in normal conditions, before fitting. Ask how long they allow.

Hold the final 10% for a few weeks. Movement, lifting and hollow spots appear with use and seasonal change, not on the day.
