The short answer

  • Emergency callouts fill the diary and never grow the business.
  • The customer who called you at 10pm is your best route to planned work, and almost nobody follows it up.
  • Plumbing is unregulated, so you compete with anyone who owns a wrench. Your qualifications are worth stating.
  • Gas and unvented cylinder tickets are genuine differentiators. Most customers do not know they are separate.
  • Landlords and agents are the most underworked source of recurring work in this trade.

Why plumbing quotes get turned down

Two different markets, two different problems.

Emergency work is not really quoted, it is accepted under duress. The risk is reputational: a customer under pressure who later feels overcharged tells everyone. The trades who do well here are the ones who state the call-out basis before travelling, because it converts a fraught transaction into a fair one.

Planned work is where you lose to price, because plumbing is unregulated and the customer cannot tell you apart from someone with no qualifications at all. There is no equivalent of Part P for general plumbing, so nothing external signals competence.

What the customer is actually weighing

On an emergency: whether the bill will be reasonable. On planned work: whether you are qualified for what they need, which they usually cannot judge.

Where the work comes from

Your own emergency callouts. You have already been in their house and solved something. A follow-up a fortnight later about the work they mentioned needing is the highest-converting lead in this trade, and hardly anyone sends it.

Landlords and letting agents. Recurring, predictable, and they value availability over price.

Bathroom fitters and kitchen fitters who need a plumber they can rely on.

Heating engineers passing on non-gas work.

What separates you from the quote below yours

State your qualifications specifically. Gas Safe is separate from plumbing. Unvented cylinder certification is separate again. Most customers assume a plumber does all of it, and telling them otherwise makes you the one who explained it.

Fixed prices on defined jobs. Hourly work with no cap makes customers anxious. A fixed price for a defined task wins against a lower hourly rate.

Set the emergency basis before travelling. Call-out charge, what it includes, hourly rate after, how parts are charged, by text if you can.

Making the money conversation easy

Materials are cheap relative to labour, so on most jobs no deposit is needed at all, and around 10% on a bathroom or system replacement. Saying so up front distinguishes you immediately.

Common questions

Will this work for my kind of job?
It suits planned work with clear stages best. Very short reactive jobs move too fast for staged payments.
Does the customer have to agree?
Yes. They approve each stage before it is released, which is the part that reassures them.
Do I still take a deposit?
Yes, as a capped kick-off with a stated reason for what it covers.
How does it help me win work?
It removes the objection you are currently losing quotes to without ever being told.
