What Is a System Flush?

A system flush cleans corrosion debris and sludge out of a heating system. A powerflush is the more thorough version, using a pump to force water and chemicals through at higher velocity.
Why it is not optional
Old heating systems accumulate iron oxide sludge. Fit a new boiler onto a dirty system and that debris circulates into it, blocking the heat exchanger and causing early failure.
Manufacturers routinely require the system to be cleaned, and a warranty claim can be declined where it was not. So skipping the flush to save money on installation can cost you the warranty on a boiler that is meant to last a decade.
The magnetic filter
A magnetic filter fitted on the return pipe catches circulating debris before it reaches the boiler. It needs cleaning at each annual service.
Most manufacturers now expect one, and some require it for the warranty. Check whether your quote includes it.
What to ask
Whether a flush is included and what type, a chemical flush and a powerflush are different jobs at different prices. Whether a magnetic filter is fitted. And what the manufacturer requires, since that is what a warranty claim will be judged against.
